East Riding Treasure House
Beverley is a thriving market town some seven miles north of the
port of Hull in the East Riding of Yorkshire. Today, there are about
30,000 people living in and around the town. Evidence of people living
in the area goes back to pre Roman times.

Some say that the town's name comes from the Old English meaning
beaver stream or beaver clearing in woodland. In 714 AD Bishop John
of Hexham and York, renowned for miraculous healing powers, settled
in Beverley until his death in 721 AD. After his canonisation in 1037 as
St John of Beverley the town saw many visiting pilgrims.
